How I Became A Social Media Coordinator Within The Food Industry

Back in May of this year, I accepted my new job offer within the food marketing industry.

If you're new here, hi my name is Fleur and I'm a social media coordinator of a pub and restaurant in central London here's how I got here.

I think to start this story we've gotta rewind to when I was a child. I've always loved baking and cooking, so much so that growing up I had a fake bakery called 'Fleur's Buns' complete with business cards and all. When I was 14, I took this passion and started a blog called Wishes and Tea where I'd share photos of things I had baked, this slowly evolved into a blog where I would just share updates from my life and my other passions. the takeaway here is that food and content creation has always been a passion of mine, I'm not saying you need 10 years of passion behind you but in my opinion, it really helps if you truly love the industry you're going into.

Blogging and Instagramming and my general love of creating content hugely influenced what I decided to study at university. Following my gap year, I enrolled at Oxford Brookes University to study Publishing Media (which you can read about here). I had a great time making lifelong friends and learning a lot. Throughout uni, I continued blogging and made a new Instagram account dedicated to my love of food and taking photos of food called WhatFleurEats. I knew the importance of gaining work experience, so in my second year I became a brand ambassador for Ted Baker - in hindsight, I don't know how much this has influenced my career but I had fun doing it regardless!

I graduated during the pandemic and worked for my dad's company where I predominately took photographs of product lines, this hugely helped me learn more about styling and editing photos in post-production.

My first job in London was at a social media agency which specialised in the property industry. I worked alongside the founder to set up the company and I learnt an incredible amount of lessons here, I'll forever be grateful to this company for teaching me so much. Sadly, I knew my passions weren't property led and I truly wanted to follow my passion for food marketing so when I saw the role of Social Media Coordinator at The Dickens Inn being advertised, I knew I had to apply.

From the date of sending the first application, the whole process took about three months. I think my work experience at the marketing agency paired with my love of food blogging helped me get this role. I spoke to my interviewer a few weeks into the role and she told me that it was clear to her how passionate about it I was.

...and there we are, I truly do think that little 14-year-old Fleur starting that blog truly helped out 24-year-old Fleur land a job in the field she is truly in love with.
