Gap Year Travel: Thailand

Bangkok ➙ Phuket ➙ Koh Phi Phi ➙ Krabi ➙ Koh Tao ➙ Koh Samui ➙ Elephant Hills

The Thailand stint of our trip started in Bangkok, now I had to admit neither of us was particularly fond of the city. It was extremely hot and busy and we just weren’t the biggest fans so we shamefully did spend a lot of time by the pool. The rest of Thailand was so intense and jam-packed we ended island hopping from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi to Krabi to Koh Tao to Koh Samui and back to Phuket. Each island had different offerings, and each island was as enjoyable as the last. Koh Phi Phi was a party island and I have to admit that a lot of it is blurry in my memory, we did go to the famous Maya Bay though which was insane and the entire boat trip was great! We used Krabi as a stopover and to give us a chance to recover from Phi Phi. On Koh Tao we stayed at the most amazing hostel called The Dearly and should you ever go you have to stay there, it was amazing! We got our PADI diving licences whilst on Koh Tao and to be honest life was pretty good on that island! Next up was Koh Samui where unfortunately Floss became quite ill so we did very little, on our last day she got a little better so along with our roommates we rented motorbikes and rode from waterfall to waterfall. The following day we had to get an eight-hour bus all the way back to Phuket as we were meeting some friends from home before going to spend four days at an elephant sanctuary. During those four days we (as the name would suggest) spent time with elephants, we went to Koh Sok Lake for the day where we kayaked, lounged in the sun and ate what can only be described as one of the nicest meals I’ve ever had. We also went on a hike around the local area which was so cool! After our four day trip, we returned back to Phuket where we spent our last night packing our rucksacks ahead of our flight to Sydney the following day.
